The Crystal Jar
Maya wanted to enter the school science fair. She could not think of a good project. She flipped through an old magazine one night. An article showed how to grow crystals. That seemed like the perfect project idea. Maya asked her mother for some borax. They found a small box in the closet. With her mother's help, Maya mixed the borax with warm water. She hung a string down into the jar. Every day after school, Maya checked the jar. At first, nothing seemed to happen at all. By the end of the week, crystals had formed. Maya lifted the string out to look. The crystals sparkled like small pieces of ice. She wrote down her steps every single day. On fair day, Maya showed her crystals at the science fair and explained her project proudly. Two younger students wanted to try it too. Maya promised to show them how it worked. Maya felt proud of what she had learned. Growing crystals taught her patience and care.
