About this worksheet

Print is everywhere before a child can read a word of it, and knowing what it is for comes first. A stop sign means stop even to someone who cannot spell it; a calendar answers a question a clock cannot. This page starts there, asking which everyday object carries writing at all, and only then moves to the book itself: the closed cover you see first, the single page you turn, and the direction the words run in, which in English is left to right and then down to the next line. The last level turns it into a job. You want to know whether it is snack time yet, so which of these do you look at? Every answer is a picture, so nothing has to be read to be answered. Keep a real book beside the sheet, touch the cover, run a finger under a line of words, and turn one page at a time. That is the habit the page is really building.

What your child will learn

  • Spot the everyday things that carry writing
  • Name the front cover and the page you turn
  • Show that words run left to right and then down
  • Match a piece of print to the job it does

Worked example
