About this worksheet

Looking closely enough to see that two shapes are not quite the same is the skill underneath letter recognition, because b and d differ by nothing except which way the round part faces. This worksheet builds that habit and then puts it straight to work. The first level shows four pictures with one changed, and the child points to the odd one; the position moves around, so a quick guess at the last picture will not do. The second level swaps the pictures for letters and uses the pairs children really mix up, so a row of b, b, d, b has to be scanned properly. The third changes the question: five different letters with one repeated, and the child has to find the letter that appears twice rather than the one that appears once. Ask for evidence every time. Which two match? Point to them. A child who can show you why is doing the looking, not guessing.

What your child will learn

  • Find the one picture in a row that is different
  • Scan a row from left to right instead of guessing
  • Tell look-alike letters such as b and d apart
  • Find the letter that appears twice in a row

Worked example

The row reads b, b, d, b. The third letter has its round part on the other side, so it is the different one.

Common mistake

Glancing at the row and answering before comparing the pictures one at a time.

Helpful hint

Point at each one in turn and compare it with the one before it.
