About this worksheet

This page is the other half of letter-sound work. Instead of being handed a letter and looking for a picture, your child is handed pictures and has to produce the letter, which is what spelling actually asks for. Every question shows a row of three drawings. On the first version all three names begin the same way, so the child hears the shared sound and then finds the single letter that spells it. On the next version only two of the three share a beginning, so she has to compare all three names before she can decide which sound is even the right one. The last version shows three names that all begin differently and asks about the picture on the left, which brings in the left-to-right habit every page of print depends on. Name the pictures aloud each time. The point is not vocabulary; it is noticing what the front of a name sounds like.

What your child will learn

  • Notice what several spoken names share at the front
  • Name the letter that spells a shared beginning sound
  • Compare three names and find the two that begin alike
  • Work from left to right when a row of pictures is given

Worked example

The row shows a cat, a cup, and a car. Each name begins /k/, and the letter that spells /k/ in all three is C.

Common mistake

Answering from one picture instead of all three. On the two-out-of-three page, the odd name will be the one a child names first if nobody slows her down.

Helpful hint

Say all three names before choosing a letter, not just the first one.
