About this worksheet

The first words a child owns are not sounded out. They are recognized, the way a logo on a cereal box is recognized, and the first thing she uses to recognize them is the letter at the front. This page builds that habit on a small bank of everyday words. Each question shows one written word in letter boxes and offers pictures, and your child decides which picture the word names. On the first version the choices all begin with different letters, so the front letter alone settles it. On the second every choice begins the same way and the words are different lengths, so she has to count boxes as well. On the third the choices begin alike AND have the same number of letters, which leaves only the letters in the middle and at the end to tell them apart. Read the letters aloud one at a time; do not read the word for her.

Worked example
