About this worksheet

A consonant blend places two sounds close together while allowing each sound to remain audible. Children commonly record the stronger consonant and lose its neighbor, writing cap for clap or sop for stop. This worksheet includes both beginning and ending blends so first graders must listen at more than one position. The questions rotate among choosing an accurate whole word, supplying the missing blend, building a spelling from a clue, and checking which letters represent the clustered sounds. Support practice offers shorter choices and visible word frames. Standard and challenge levels require more independent production but keep every target inside the blend skill. Listen for an added vowel between consonants, such as suh-top. Say the sounds close together without inserting “uh,” then ask your child to assign one letter to each sound. A smooth final blend confirms that neither consonant disappeared.

What your child will learn

  • Hear both sounds in a consonant blend
  • Spell beginning and ending blends
  • Keep blend letters in spoken order
  • Avoid adding a vowel between consonants

Worked example

Clap begins /k/ /l/. Write C then L before AP, keeping both opening sounds.

Common mistake

Dropping one consonant because blend sounds are spoken quickly together.

Helpful hint

Stretch the blend and tap once for each consonant.
