A narrative becomes understandable when events are told in the order they happened. First graders often begin with the event they remember best, skip the step that caused the result, or repeat ‘and then’ without showing where the story starts and ends. This worksheet uses three concise event cards to make time order visible. Children decide which action must happen first, identify the middle step, choose the ending, match a complete retell, and select a transition that fits one position. Support sequences are familiar routines with strong cause and effect. Challenge sequences contain actions that are all plausible on their own, so the child must reason about prerequisites. The printed order of the cards is shuffled and does not supply the answer. Encourage your child to move a finger according to the time order and say ‘first, next, last’ aloud. Then read the chosen retell as one connected story rather than as three unrelated labels.
