About this worksheet

Verbs can tell when an action happens. A present-tense verb tells about an action happening now or often, while a past-tense verb tells about something that already happened. First graders are beginning to hear this difference in everyday talk: ‘I jump’ and ‘I jumped,’ or ‘we play’ and ‘we played.’ The ending can be a helpful clue, but meaning comes first. This worksheet gives simple time words such as today, now, yesterday, and last night so children can connect each verb form to a real moment. They will choose a verb, name its tense, and change a sentence from now to before. When reviewing, invite your child to point backward for yesterday and forward for today. Pairing the time clue with the word form helps children avoid adding ed when an action is still happening.

What your child will learn

  • Tell present from past actions
  • Use time words as clues
  • Read regular past verbs
  • Change an action from now to before
