Even in first grade, readers can notice when an author gives a reason to support a point. A text might say that helmets are useful because they help protect your head, or that plants need light because leaves use it to make food. Children often pick any fact near the claim instead of asking whether the fact actually explains why the point is true. This worksheet presents short claims and supporting sentences, then asks students to choose the reason, reject unrelated facts, and connect because language to evidence. Support pages use direct because sentences. Standard and challenge pages sometimes separate the claim and reason across two sentences. Encourage children to ask, 'Why does the author think that?' The answer to that question is usually the reason.
