About this worksheet
Rights are freedoms and protections people should have, while responsibilities are actions people are expected to carry out. The two ideas connect but are not trades: a child does not lose the right to safety after making a mistake. First graders often confuse a wanted privilege with a right, or name an adult rule when asked for their own responsibility. This worksheet uses concrete classroom and community pairs. A right to learn connects with a responsibility not to stop others from learning; a right to use shared materials connects with caring for them; a right to share an idea connects with listening when someone else speaks. Questions rotate between identifying rights, identifying responsibilities, matching pairs, and predicting fair action. Watch for answers framed only as obedience. Responsibility includes active care for people, places, and shared opportunities.
What your child will learn
Tell a right from a responsibility
Match a right with a related duty
Apply fairness to shared classroom situations
Protect another person's rights through actions
Worked example
Children have a right to learn. Listening during instruction is a responsibility because it protects that opportunity for everyone.
Common mistake
Treating a special privilege as a basic right or assuming rights must be earned by perfect behaviour.
Helpful hint
A right protects people; a responsibility is an action that respects those protections.
