A complete sentence shares a whole thought. It usually tells who or what the sentence is about and what happens. A fragment is only a piece of a thought, even if it has interesting words in it. First graders can often hear the difference when they say the words aloud, but they may need practice explaining what is missing. This worksheet places both complete sentences and fragments inside clear directions so children can compare them. They will decide whether a group of words is complete, add a missing action, and choose the sentence that makes sense by itself. Encourage your child to read each example with a natural stop at the end. If you still want to ask ‘What happened?’ or ‘Who did it?’ the words may be a fragment. This listening check is more useful than asking a child to memorize a definition alone.
