About this worksheet

First grade geometry has two strands, and this worksheet covers both. The first is naming shapes by their attributes rather than by how they look, so a triangle is any closed shape with three straight sides, whether it is tall, squashed, or upside down. Children who learn shapes only from a picture book often reject an unusual triangle. The second strand is partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal parts and learning the words halves, fourths and quarters. The word equal is what matters here: a shape cut into two uneven pieces has not been cut into halves, and children need to see non-examples to grasp that. Later fraction work in second and third grade rests directly on this idea.
