Editing is different from revising. Revision improves the idea; editing checks whether the sentence follows conventions so a reader can move through it smoothly. Fourth graders need repeated practice with capitalization, commas in lists, commas after introductory clauses, end punctuation, and quotation marks. This worksheet gives short sentences with one clear convention target at a time. The wrong answers are common editing slips, such as capitalizing one proper noun but not another, leaving commas out of a list, or forgetting quotation marks around spoken words. Parents should ask which rule the child used. If the answer is only it looks right, have the child name the specific convention. Naming the rule makes editing more reliable in their own written drafts.
