About this worksheet

Describing words help a listener make a clearer picture. Kindergarten children use these words naturally when they say the red cup, a tiny bug, or three blocks, but they may not yet notice the job each word performs. This worksheet develops that awareness without asking children to recite a grammar definition. Every question pairs a familiar noun with a concrete detail such as color, size, texture, sound, or number. Children choose the word that answers a useful question: What kind? Which color? How many? The wrong choices are naming words or actions, so the activity also strengthens the difference among the word jobs introduced on neighboring pages. Read the whole phrase aloud after each choice. If the phrase makes a clear and sensible picture, the describing word is doing its job. Encourage your child to look around and add one describing word to the name of a real object after finishing the page.

What your child will learn

  • Choose a word that tells what something is like
  • Use color, size, texture, sound, and number details
  • Tell a describing word from a noun or action
  • Build a clear noun phrase with one useful detail
