About this worksheet

Community helpers are the people whose work meets a need that lots of families share: teaching, growing food, putting out fires, mending people, keeping a road safe to cross. Preschoolers usually recognize the uniform or the truck long before they connect it to the service, and they will happily pick the fire engine for a lost library book because the fire engine is the more memorable picture. Every question here starts from the need and asks who does that work, or starts from a tool or a building and asks whose it is. One group is about emergencies, and it draws the line a young child actually needs: your job is to go and get a grown-up, and the grown-up makes the phone call. Any person can do any of these jobs, and the pictures are deliberately mixed. Extend the page by naming helpers your child actually sees, and by saying exactly what work each one does, which is the part that sticks.

What your child will learn

  • Match a helper to the building they work in
  • Match a helper to the tool of their trade
  • Choose the right helper for an everyday need
  • Know to fetch a grown-up when something is an emergency

Worked example

Read aloud: the class is learning to write their names and somebody has to show them how. Point to the helper who does that work. The child hears learning and points to the teacher rather than the baker. Start from the job, not from the uniform.

Common mistake

Choosing the helper with the most exciting vehicle. Ask what work has to be done first, then look for the person who is trained to do it.

Helpful hint

Say what job needs doing, then find the person who does that job.
