About this worksheet

Endings are harder than beginnings, and not because children hear them badly. The front of a word arrives first and gets all the attention, while the end has to be held in mind until the rest of the word has gone by. That is a memory problem as much as a listening one, and the fix is to say the word, then say it again and stop on the last little sound. Every question here shows a picture, so nothing has to be read, and the answer is a single letter. On the middle version the picture's own first letter is offered as a choice, because reaching for the beginning is the mistake nearly every preschooler makes here at least once. The hardest version shows three pictures at once and asks what letter all three names finish on, which means holding three endings in mind and comparing them.

Worked example
