About this worksheet

M and N are the two sounds in this group a preschooler is most likely to confuse, because both are made with the voice humming and the air going out through the nose. The difference is entirely in the mouth: lips closed for /m/, tongue up behind the teeth for /n/. Children hear that difference much faster when they can feel it, so it is worth putting a finger on your lips as you say each one. This page also carries K, L, and the vowel O. Every question is answered by pointing at a picture, so a child who cannot read a single word can still show exactly what she can hear. The versions differ in what they ask, not in how long they take: find the match, find the picture that does not match, then choose between two letters shown together. Name the pictures aloud before your child chooses.
