About this worksheet

The last six letters are the ones that need the most care, and X needs it most of all. X hardly ever starts a word a preschooler knows, and the sound it usually spells, /ks/, lands at the END of box, fox, and six. So the X question on this page asks about the end of a name, not the beginning, and no item ever claims that X stands for a first sound. U, V, W, Y, and Z are all asked at the front of the word in the usual way. Because every choice is a drawing, your child answers by pointing, and the reading load is zero. Name the pictures for her the first time through; after that, let her name them herself, because saying the word is what makes the first or last sound audible. Two of these letters have only one picture in our set, so those questions stay the same from version to version on purpose.
