About this worksheet

Comparing is where counting starts to become mathematics. A child who can count two groups still has to decide what the two totals mean together, and young children often answer from appearance instead: the group that spreads further across the page, or the one with the objects they like. These pages keep the objects the same size and mix them into one row, so the only way through is to count each kind. Ready sheets use counts that are far apart. Practice sheets bring them closer and ask for the fewest as well as the most, because children reach for the biggest pile by habit and have to be asked for the other end. Some rows contain two kinds with exactly the same number; when your child notices, say the word same out loud, because that is the third comparison and it is the one that gets skipped. The stretch sheet shows two separate groups and asks how many are in the smaller one, so the child has to choose a group before counting it.

What your child will learn

  • Decide which kind of picture there is the most of
  • Find the kind there is the fewest of
  • Notice when two amounts are the same
  • Count the group you chose, not the first group you see

Worked example

In a row with four apples, three cups and two bells, count each kind. Four is the most, so the apple is the answer.

Common mistake

Answering with the object that catches the eye instead of counting every kind in the row.

Helpful hint

Count one kind of picture at a time and remember each total.
