About this worksheet

A map is a picture of somewhere seen from above, and that is a genuinely new idea at three or four. This page builds it slowly. The first questions are not about maps at all: they ask which place you go to when you want to borrow a book, or buy food, or run about outside, because a place is best known by what people do there. Then the same places appear as small pictures on a little map, and the child matches the picture on the map to the picture in the answer row. There are no words anywhere on the map, and there do not need to be, because a school, a home, a shop, a park and a wood are drawn as five different things. The last groups add a compass, and north and south become simply the top and the bottom of the page. Nothing here asks a preschooler to plan a real journey. Walk somewhere familiar and name one landmark at a time instead.

Worked example

Read aloud: find the shop on the map, then point to the place that is directly above it. The compass shows north at the top, so the place above is the one to the north. The child traces upward with a finger and matches the picture they land on to the same picture in the answer row.

Choosing a place by its size or color instead of by where it sits. Put a finger on the starting place first, then move.
