About this worksheet

Naming the weather is easy when someone tells you what the sky is doing. This worksheet does the opposite. Half the questions show what people on the ground are doing — every umbrella on the street is open, the kites are pulling hard, everyone is squinting under a hat — and ask your child to point to the sky that would cause it. The other half show the sky and ask what your child would take outside. Nothing on the page states the answer, and nothing has to be read: you say the question, your child points to a picture. The last question is a prediction rather than an observation, asking what will fall out of a sky that has just turned dark, which is the beginning of thinking about weather rather than only naming it. Step outside afterwards and run the same two questions on the real sky.

  • Use evidence on the ground to work out what the sky is doing
  • Choose what to wear or carry for a sunny, rainy, snowy, or windy day
  • Tell clouds apart from clouds that are raining
  • Predict what is likely to fall from a dark, heavy sky

Worked example

The page shows a row of open umbrellas. You ask what the sky must be doing for everyone to put those up. Umbrellas go up when water falls, so your child points to the raining sky.

Choosing the raining sky for any cloud at all, instead of checking whether anything is actually falling.
