About this worksheet

Grouping is how a child stores a new word so it can be found again: a cat is not just a cat, it is an animal, and every other animal is now nearby. The old page gave the game away — “Crayon, paint, and chalk help us make art. What group name fits?” answered by art tools — and repeated two of its items word for word between the support and challenge levels. Here the group is only ever drawn, never named. The first level shows three pictures that belong together and asks for a fourth. The second level shows four and asks which one does not fit, which needs the same reasoning run backwards. The third changes what a group even means: instead of animals or foods, the pictures belong together because we use them at the same time — bath time, bedtime, a rainy walk — so a child cannot fall back on a category label they have memorized. Ask what the row has in common before anybody points.

What your child will learn

  • Work out what a row of pictures has in common
  • Add one more member to a group of pictures
  • Find the picture that does not belong with the others
  • Group things by when we use them, not only by what they are

Worked example

The row shows a duck, a frog and a fish, and a bell sits with them. Three of them live at the pond and the bell does not, so the bell is the odd one out.

Common mistake

Choosing a favorite picture without checking it against what the other three share.

Helpful hint

Name every picture out loud first. The group is easier to hear than to see.
