About this worksheet

Sequencing events helps children understand how a text moves from beginning to end. Third graders may remember all the events but still place them in the wrong order, especially when the passage contains words such as after, at last, or before. This worksheet gives short passages with three clear events and asks students to order them, find the first event, choose what happens next, and identify the last event. Sequence-card visuals are used only for the event cards being arranged, so the visual supports the same skill as the question. Encourage your child to reread the passage and mark time words. The right order should make the passage make sense. Students should retell the same order in their own words.

What your child will learn

  • Order events from a passage
  • Find the first and last event
  • Use time words to choose what happens next
  • Retell a passage in order

Worked example

If Mia checks the garden, notices dry soil, and waters the plants, watering belongs last because it solves the problem.

Common mistake

Choosing the most memorable event first even when another event happened before it.

Helpful hint

Look for what had to happen before the other events.
