A contraction squeezes two words into one and uses an apostrophe to show where letters were left out: do not becomes don't, and I am becomes I'm. First graders hear contractions all the time, but they often write them without the apostrophe or with it in the wrong place. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows two words, and your child circles the contraction made from them from three spellings.
The wrong spellings leave out the apostrophe or put it in the wrong spot. Support sheets use the most common ones, such as don't and it's; challenge sheets add we're, won't and I've. Point to the apostrophe and ask which letters it replaced.
What your child will learn
Know that a contraction is two words made short
Find the apostrophe where letters were left out
Spell don't, I'm, it's and other common contractions
Read a contraction and say the two words
Common Core standard: L.2.2.C
Worked example
The two words are do not. Leave out the o in not and put an apostrophe there: don't. Circle don't, not dont or do'nt.
Common mistake
Leaving out the apostrophe, or putting it between the letters that stay instead of where letters were left out.
Helpful hint
Which letters were left out? The apostrophe goes in their place.
