About this worksheet

An adverb tells more about a verb: how something happens, when it happens or where it happens. In the sentence 'The turtle crawled slowly,' slowly is the adverb because it tells how the turtle crawled. Many adverbs end in -ly, such as quietly, carefully and loudly, and that ending is a useful clue for second graders. This worksheet gives ten sentences, each with one adverb, and the child circles it from the words of the sentence.

The other choices are the noun, the verb, and on the harder sheets a describing word, which is easy to mix up with an adverb. Ask your child the question that finds the adverb: how did it happen? If the word answers how, it is an adverb.

What your child will learn

  • Find the adverb in a sentence
  • Tell an adverb from a verb and a describing word
  • Use how, when and where to test a word

Common Core standard: L.2.1.E
