Most nouns make the plural by adding s, but a noun that ends in a consonant and then y follows a different rule: change the y to i and add es. One baby becomes two babies, and one city becomes three cities. This worksheet gives ten singular words, each ending in a consonant plus y, and the child writes the plural on the line.
The challenge sheet mixes in words where a vowel comes before the y, such as boy and key, which only add s, so the child has to look at the letter before the y. Say the word aloud, then write it. Ask your child to check: if the letter before the y is a vowel, keep the y. If it is a consonant, trade the y for ies.
Common Core standard: L.2.1.B
One bunny, two bunnies: the y changes to i and es is added. One boy, two boys: the letter before y is a vowel, so only s is added.
Adding s to the end without changing the y (baby becomes babys).
If the letter before the y is a consonant, change the y to i and add es.
