About this worksheet

Sentences do different jobs. A statement tells something and ends with a period. A question asks something and ends with a question mark. A command tells someone to do something and usually ends with a period. An exclamation shows strong feeling and ends with an exclamation mark. Knowing the four kinds helps a child read with the right voice and write the right end mark.

This worksheet gives ten sentences, and the child circles the kind that each one is. The end mark is a clue, but not always enough on its own, so the child also has to think about what the sentence does. A command is the only kind that starts with a verb and has nobody named. Ask your child to read each sentence aloud with the voice it needs.

What your child will learn

  • Tell statements, questions, commands and exclamations apart
  • Use the end mark as a clue
