About this worksheet

Past tense tells what already happened. Most verbs add ed, as in jumped and walked, but many of the most common verbs change in other ways: go becomes went, eat becomes ate and run becomes ran. These are irregular verbs, and second graders need to know them because they use them every day when they talk and write about yesterday.

This worksheet gives ten sentences that begin with Yesterday and show the present form of the verb in brackets, and the child writes the past form on the line. Ask your child to say the sentence aloud with the answer. Words like goed, eated and runned sound wrong to a careful ear, and they are the most common slips on this skill.

What your child will learn

  • Write the past tense of irregular verbs
  • Know that some verbs change instead of adding ed
  • Use the clue word yesterday

Common Core standard: L.2.1.D

Worked example

Yesterday, the children ____ (go) to the park. The past of go is went.

Common mistake

Adding ed to an irregular verb (goed, eated, runned).
