About this worksheet

Sentences do different jobs. A statement tells something and ends with a period, a question asks something and ends with a question mark, a command tells someone to do something, and an exclamation shows strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point. Knowing the four kinds helps a child choose the right end mark and, later, write with more variety. On this worksheet your child reads ten sentences and writes S, Q, C or E on the line for each one.

Building Confidence uses clear examples, On Level adds questions that start with why, which and when and commands that sound polite, and Challenge Me includes sentences that are hard to tell apart, such as a statement about a question. Ask your child to read each sentence aloud in the voice it needs.

What your child will learn

  • Tell a statement, a question, a command and an exclamation apart
  • Match each kind of sentence to its end mark
  • Read a sentence the way its end mark says to
