About this worksheet

Most verbs make the past tense by adding -ed, but a group of common verbs does not follow the rule. We say ran, not runned, and went, not goed. These are the irregular verbs, and third graders meet them in nearly everything they read and write. The past forms have to be learned one at a time, so plenty of short, clear practice helps. Every sentence on this worksheet starts with a time word such as yesterday or last night, then leaves a blank for the verb, with the plain form of the verb in brackets.

Your child writes the past tense on the line. Early sentences use verbs children already say aloud, such as run, eat and go. Later sentences use longer forms, such as brought and thought. If a form looks odd, read the sentence out loud and listen for the one that sounds right.

What your child will learn

  • Write the past tense of common irregular verbs
  • Use a time word to tell that a sentence is in the past
  • Know that some verbs do not take -ed
  • Spell forms such as brought, caught and thought

Common Core standard: L.3.1.D

Worked example

Last night, we ____ (eat) soup: the plain verb is eat, and its past tense is ate.

Common mistake

Adding -ed to every verb, which gives forms like runned or goed.

Helpful hint

Read the sentence aloud and listen for the form that sounds right.
