About this worksheet

A verb has to match its subject: one dog runs, two dogs run. On this fourth grade grammar worksheet your child reads twelve short sentences and circles the verb that agrees with the subject, choosing between the forms printed under each one. The harder sheets add two subjects joined by and, words that come between the subject and the verb, and group words such as team and class.

What your child will learn

  • Match a verb to a singular or a plural subject
  • Use is and are, has and have, do and does correctly
  • Treat two subjects joined by and as plural
  • Find the real subject when other words come between it and the verb

Common Core standard: L.4.1

Worked example

The dogs ____ in the yard. (run / runs) The subject is dogs, which means more than one, so the answer is run.

Common mistake

Matching the verb to the noun nearest to it, as in 'The box of crayons are on the table'.

Helpful hint

Find the subject first. One person or thing takes the -s verb; more than one takes the plain verb.
