About this worksheet

Perfect tenses show that one action is finished before another time: has or have for now, had for an earlier time in the past, and will have for a future time. Each sheet has twelve sentences with a time clue and a blank, and your child circles the verb that fits. Building Confidence offers two choices and the other levels offer three.

What your child will learn

  • Use has or have for an action finished by now
  • Use had for an action finished before another past time
  • Use will have for an action finished by a future time

Common Core standard: L.5.1.B

Worked example

Maya has watered the garden three times this week. Before the bell rang, Ben had finished the test. By next Friday, we will have finished the project.

Common mistake

Using had when the clue points to now, such as since September.

Helpful hint

Look at the time clue: since or so far points to has or have, before or by the time points to had, and by next week points to will have.
