About this worksheet

A preposition shows how a noun relates to something else in the sentence: where it is (under, beside), where it goes (across, into) or when (before, during). A preposition always starts a phrase with a noun, like 'under the table'.

On this fifth grade sheet each of twelve sentences has exactly one preposition and the child writes it on the line. Each version has different sentences, and the answer key gives every preposition.

What your child will learn

  • Spot the word that shows position or time
  • Find the noun after it
  • Write the preposition
  • Tell a preposition from a verb

Common Core standard: L.5.1.A

Worked example

In 'The cat slept under the table', the word under is the preposition.

Common mistake

Writing the whole phrase (under the table) instead of just the preposition (under).

Helpful hint

Find the phrase that tells where or when, then pick the first word of it.
