About this worksheet

Every sentence has two parts: the subject, which tells who or what the sentence is about, and the predicate, which tells what the subject does or is. The complete subject is the main noun with all the words that go with it, such as 'The tall girl' or 'Both of my brothers'. On this fifth grade sheet a child reads twelve sentences and writes the complete subject of each on the line.

Because the predicate is everything left over, finding the subject also shows where the predicate starts. Each version has different sentences, and the answer key gives each subject.

What your child will learn

  • Find who or what the sentence is about
  • Write the complete subject
  • See where the predicate begins
  • Tell a subject from a predicate

Common Core standard: L.4.1.F

Worked example

In 'The tall girl ran across the field', the complete subject is 'The tall girl' and the predicate is 'ran across the field'.

Common mistake

Writing only the one main noun (girl) when the complete subject includes the words that describe it (The tall girl).

Helpful hint

Ask who or what did it, then add the words that go with it. Stop before the action word.
