About this worksheet

Progressive tenses show an action that is going on at a certain time: 'is walking' right now, 'was walking' at six o'clock yesterday and 'will be walking' tomorrow at noon. Each uses a form of the verb be and a verb ending in -ing, and the form of be has to agree with the subject.

On this fifth grade sheet each of twelve sentences starts with a time clue and has the verb in brackets, and the child writes the progressive form on the line. Each version has different sentences, and the answer key gives every verb phrase.

What your child will learn

  • Use am, is, are, was, were and will be
  • Add -ing to the verb
  • Read the time clue
  • Match is or are to the subject

Common Core standard: L.4.1.B
