About this worksheet

Opposites are words that mean the very opposite of each other: up and down, in and out, wet and dry. Children learn them early because they can act them out, standing up and sitting down, opening and shutting a door. Noticing opposites also builds vocabulary, because a child who knows what full means finds it easier to say what empty means. On this page a column of words stands on the left and a column of words stands on the right in a different order, and the child draws a line from each word to its opposite.

Every sheet uses different pairs, and a word never has two possible opposites on the same sheet. Support sheets have four pairs, standard sheets have five, and challenge sheets have six. Read each word aloud and act it out. After the page, play a game where you say a word and your child says its opposite.

What your child will learn

  • Know that opposite words mean the reverse of each other
  • Match a word to its opposite
  • Read short words by sight
  • Use opposites to describe things

Common Core standard: L.K.5.B

Worked example

The word on the left is wet. The opposite of wet is dry, so draw a line from wet to dry.

Common mistake

Matching two words that go together, such as in and on, instead of two words that mean the reverse.

Helpful hint

Think of the word, then think of the very opposite.
