About this worksheet

A describing word is only useful when a child can test it against the world, so every item here ends with a finger on a picture rather than with a label like adjective. The first level says one word and asks which picture it is true of. Cold is a snowflake and not a drum; hard is a rock and not a cloud. The second level gives an example the child already knows and asks for a different one, which is a real jump: a pillow is soft, so what else is soft? That question cannot be answered by matching a word to a picture, only by understanding what the word means. The third level joins two describing words with AND, so a picture that satisfies half the clue has to be rejected. Small alone could be a button or a key; small and round is only the button. No item depends on color, because these sheets are printed in grayscale and ink-saver as often as in color, and a question a printer can erase is not a question.

What your child will learn

  • Match a describing word to something it is really true of
  • Give a second example of a describing word you already know
  • Test one picture against two describing words at once
  • Talk about texture, size, sound, taste and temperature

Worked example

You say, “Find the one that is small AND round.” A key is small but not round and a ball is round but not small, so both are out. The button is both.

Common mistake

Accepting the first picture that fits half the clue, which is why the two-word items put a half-match in the choices on purpose.

Helpful hint

Let your child touch a real cold, soft or bumpy thing before answering.
