About this worksheet
Composing shapes helps children see geometry as parts that can make a larger whole. First graders use triangles, squares, rectangles, and other shapes to build composite figures, then describe what parts were used. This prepares them for area, fractions, and spatial reasoning later. Children sometimes focus only on the outside outline and forget the smaller shapes that made it. This worksheet asks them to choose which parts could make a whole, count repeated pieces, and identify a new shape built from smaller ones. Support pages use two simple parts.
