Shape recognition grows more rigorous in first grade. Children move from naming familiar examples to identifying defining attributes: number of sides, number of corners, straight edges, and whether a figure is closed. A triangle is still a triangle when it is tilted, and a rectangle remains a rectangle when it is long and narrow. This worksheet asks children to count sides and corners, choose a shape from its attributes, and reject non-defining details such as color or size.
