About this worksheet
Story problems ask children to translate a small situation into an operation. That is a different skill from calculating a fact after the equation is already written. First graders need to notice whether a story joins groups, takes some away, compares two amounts, or asks for an unknown part. This worksheet keeps the language short and concrete while changing the problem type from item to item, so a child cannot simply add every number that appears. Some questions ask for the equation first, while others ask for the answer after the situation has been understood. Support versions keep totals small and use familiar classroom objects. Standard and challenge versions move toward teen totals and comparison language. Encourage children to retell the action before computing: what happened first, what changed, and what are we trying to find?
