About this worksheet

Adding within one hundred is where second graders begin to coordinate facts, tens, and place value. They may know that seven plus five is twelve but still struggle when the same fact appears in the ones column of thirty-seven plus five. This worksheet keeps every sum within one hundred while varying the representation. Some questions are plain equations, some are short word problems, and some show the relationship on a number line or part-whole model. The variety matters because a child who can solve only one format may not yet understand the operation. Watch especially for regrouping errors, such as writing the ones-column sum as a two-digit number without carrying the ten. Ask your child to explain where each ten went.

What your child will learn

  • Add two numbers with sums up to 100
  • Use number lines and part-whole models for addition
  • Connect word problems to addition equations
  • Check regrouping in the ones column

Worked example

For 38 + 27, add the ones first: 8 + 7 = 15. Write 5 ones and carry 1 ten. Then 3 tens + 2 tens + 1 ten = 6 tens, so the sum is 65.

Common mistake

Adding the ones column correctly but forgetting to add the carried ten to the tens column.

Helpful hint

Keep the total under 100 and check whether the ones make a new ten.
