Grade 2 Math Worksheet

Count the objects in each array. Write how many in all.

An array is a set of objects arranged in equal rows and equal columns, like the cups in a muffin tin or the windows in a building. Arrays are the second grade bridge to multiplication, because adding the same number again and again, 4 + 4 + 4, is the same as counting 3 rows of 4. Each picture on this page shows an array, and your child writes how many objects there are in all.
Encourage adding the rows instead of counting one by one: if there are 3 rows with 4 in each row, say 4, 8, 12. Ask your child to point to the rows and say how many are in each before adding. Arrays up to 5 rows and 5 columns are used, as the second grade standard asks.
Common Core standard: 2.OA.C.4
An array with 3 rows of 4 apples: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. There are 12 apples in all.
Counting the rows only, or counting some objects twice, instead of adding the same number for each row.
Count how many are in one row, then add that number for every row.
