About this worksheet

Subtracting three-digit numbers starts with the easy case, where every digit on top is at least as big as the digit below it, so nothing has to be regrouped. Write the numbers in a column with ones under ones, tens under tens and hundreds under hundreds, then subtract one column at a time, starting on the right.

For 587 - 243, 7 - 3 = 4 ones, 8 - 4 = 4 tens and 5 - 2 = 3 hundreds, so the difference is 344. This worksheet has fifteen differences in columns. Ask your child to say the value of each column out loud, and to check by adding the answer to the number taken away: 344 + 243 should make 587.
