About this worksheet

Expanded form takes a number apart by place value. The number 253 is 2 hundreds, 5 tens and 3 ones, so in expanded form it is written 200 + 50 + 3. On this worksheet your child sees a number and writes it as an addition of the value of each digit, leaving out any place that holds a zero, so 4,070 becomes 4,000 + 70. Building Confidence uses three-digit numbers, On Level uses four-digit numbers, and Challenge Me uses four-digit numbers with more than one zero, where it is easy to write a term that should not be there.

Writing numbers this way shows that a digit is worth more or less depending on its place, which is the idea behind rounding, adding in columns and comparing large numbers. Ask your child to say each number aloud first: three thousand, four hundred fifty-two.

What your child will learn

  • Write a number as the sum of the value of each digit
  • Leave out a place that holds a zero
  • Say how much each digit is worth in its place

Common Core standard: 2.NBT.A.3, 3.NBT.A.1

Worked example

253 = 200 + 50 + 3. The 2 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 200.

Common mistake

Writing the digit instead of its value (2 + 5 + 3), or keeping a zero term such as 4,000 + 0 + 70.

Helpful hint

Say each digit's place first, then write what it is worth.
