About this worksheet

Subtracting a whole ten or a whole hundred is quick mental subtraction: only the tens digit or the hundreds digit changes, and sometimes a second digit when the answer crosses into the next hundred. On this worksheet your child subtracts a whole number of tens or hundreds from another number and writes the difference, with no column to set up. Building Confidence takes whole tens from a two-digit number, On Level takes whole hundreds and whole tens from three-digit numbers, and Challenge Me uses differences that cross a hundred, such as 530 - 80.

Encourage your child to subtract the tens or hundreds first and to say the answer aloud, as in 356 - 40: three hundred fifty-six, forty fewer, three hundred sixteen.

What your child will learn

  • Subtract whole tens from a two-digit number in your head
  • Subtract whole hundreds from a three-digit number
  • Cross into the next lower hundred when needed

Common Core standard: 3.NBT.A.2

Worked example

356 - 40: subtract the tens, 50 - 40 = 10, so the difference is 316.

Common mistake

Subtracting the whole ten from the ones digit instead of the tens digit.

Helpful hint

Subtract only the tens (or hundreds) first, then put the rest of the number back.
