Adding and subtracting decimals works like whole numbers, once the decimal points are lined up. Each sheet has ten sums and ten differences, in turn, and your child writes each answer on the line. Building Confidence uses tenths, On Level uses tenths and hundredths together, and Challenge Me adds two-digit whole numbers.
What your child will learn
Line up decimal points
Add decimals to hundredths
Subtract decimals to hundredths
Keep the zeros in the right places
Common Core standard: 4.NF.C.5
Worked example
0.20 + 0.09 = 0.29 and 3.5 - 1.25 = 2.25.
Common mistake
Lining the numbers up on the right instead of the decimal point, so 3.5 + 1.25 becomes 1.60.
Helpful hint
Write the decimals under each other with the points in a line, and add zeros if it helps.
