Weight and mass conversions use one fact: 1 pound is 16 ounces, 1 ton is 2,000 pounds and 1 kilogram is 1,000 grams. Each sheet has twenty measures, ten going to a smaller unit and ten to a larger one, in pounds, ounces, tons, kilograms and grams. Your child writes the new number on the line, with the unit already printed.
What your child will learn
Convert pounds, ounces and tons
Convert kilograms and grams
Multiply to go to a smaller unit and divide to go to a larger one
Common Core standard: 4.MD.A.1
Worked example
5 lb = 80 oz, because 5 × 16 = 80. And 3,000 g = 3 kg, because 3,000 ÷ 1,000 = 3.
Common mistake
Dividing when the answer should be in a smaller unit, so 5 lb becomes less than 5 oz.
Helpful hint
A smaller unit means more of them: multiply. A larger unit means fewer of them: divide.
