About this worksheet

Multiplication has rules that make big problems easier: the order of the factors does not matter, the grouping does not matter, and a factor can be split into tens and ones. Each sheet has twelve equations with one missing number, and your child writes the number that makes both sides equal. The splitting rule, such as 6 × 14 = 6 × 10 + 6 × 4, is the first step to multiplying big numbers.

What your child will learn

  • Use the order property: a × b = b × a
  • Use the grouping property for three factors
  • Split a factor into tens and ones (the distributive property)

Common Core standard: 4.NBT.B.5

Worked example

6 × 14 = 6 × 10 + 6 × ____. The missing number is 4, because 14 = 10 + 4.

Common mistake

Adding instead of multiplying across the plus sign, or splitting only one part of the factor.

Helpful hint

Find the number that appears on one side but not yet on the other.
