About this worksheet

Expanded form shows what each digit in a number is worth: 3,594 is 3,000 + 500 + 90 + 4. On each sheet your child reads ten numbers and writes the sum of their place values on the line, leaving out the zeros. Building Confidence uses four-digit numbers, On Level five digits, and Challenge Me six digits.

What your child will learn

  • Write a number as the sum of its place values
  • Leave out the places that hold a zero
  • Read a number to 999,999 by place

Common Core standard: 4.NBT.A.2

Worked example

88,005 = 80,000 + 8,000 + 5. The zeros in the hundreds and tens add nothing, so they are left out.

Common mistake

Writing a zero place as 0, or writing a digit's face value, such as 8 + 8 + 5, instead of 80,000 + 8,000 + 5.

Helpful hint

Say the place of each digit, then write the digit followed by that place's zeros.
