Grade 5 Math Worksheet

Find each difference.

Subtracting in columns means taking the lower number from the upper one place by place, starting at the ones, and regrouping from the next place when the top digit is smaller. On this fifth grade sheet a child subtracts twelve pairs of numbers with four to six digits, written one under the other, and writes the difference under the rule.
Many of the problems need regrouping, including across a zero, because that is the part children find hardest. Each version has different numbers, and the answer key shows every difference.
Common Core standard: 4.NBT.B.4
5,204 − 2,876 = 2,328: the ones need regrouping, so borrow from the tens, and so on across the zero.
Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in each column instead of regrouping.
Check your answer: the difference plus the lower number should equal the top number.
